For the past 4 years, I bring the four Rigante books Ravenheart, Midnight Falcon, Stormrider and Sword in the Storm with me for this annual trip and have a great time reread I was loaned the Ravenheart series by a good friend and read it during a summer camping trip to a state forest; one of those trips that the extended family goes on and spends a week at a 4 campsites with tents and picnic tables. I think it’s generally accepted that the Rigante are Gemmell’s equivalent of the Scots, and that this book and its subsequent sequel are his interpretation of the wars fought by the Scottish Highlanders against the invading English whereas the earlier two books were more like their wars against Rome. Gemmell has a way of writing about heroes that brings new life into the genre for me. In fact, I even had another problem with this novel.

This book also covers treachery and rape, vengeance and honour. Trying not to spoil i will just say this characters arc is unexpected when taken along side connovar from book 1 and the end of the book is genuinely moving. The great parts of the book are the imagination and folklore that set the scene, and I really look forward to seeing these sumkary in the subsequent books in the series I’m okay with unusual courage.

And it did things to my heart, sad wonderful things. The story focuses on the last straggling drops of the once proud Rigante and the small sparks of that fire that still serles as they are slowly stoked and kindled into a blaze.

If you have not read this book, I highly recommend it! Deep point of view of main characters shows all to be flawed, driven and occasionally very wrong. This book marked something of a departure for Gemmell with its restricted setting and a plot that summaey more family drama than fantasy saga, but the pace and attention to character are as sharp as ever.

Stormrider – Rigante Series 4 Book Summary and Study Guide

Each character is truly human and flawed and acts on their emotions; whether it be anger, stubborness, love, or kindness. The setting is a recognizable but altered Europe and Great Britain, with substitutes for Kelts, Vikings, and various Germanic tribes, as well as an alternate Roman empire. The second level is that, behind the action, its quite a vivid statement on privilege and oppression, family and machismo, particularly when taken in conjunection with its sequel Stormrider.

There are other influences too; the people of Stone for example are clearly modelled on the Romans, while the Sea Wolves share similarities to the vikings. Though I hadn’t read it for a year and required some Gemmell inspiration for a chapter in one of my own books. One of David Gemmell’s better love stories. The keys to this exciting, action-packed tale are the prime characters.

They disappear from the story when they don’t serve Connavar’s arc. The ending brought tears to my eyes as the conclusion of the first half of the story was brought to a close and I greatly look forward to reading Stormrider. Yes, the introduction or, in this case invention of stirrups would did change history. Unfortunately the forth book of the series is not translated to Persian yet and i have to wait for a few more month to read the final book of the series.

I will not be reading the next books in the series, but will try some of the authors other work Gemmell may be a great storyteller, rigant there are parts of the story that I didn’t care for. My only complaint, if you can call it that, is that this is very clearly a setup for the fourth book, and as such the main storyline is left unresolved. But in between, Tae, we live.
